Come armed with a good map and the latest road condition reports (essential for picking the best route). You can reach many of the major sights, including Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola, by conventional 2WD vehicle during most of the year. Seek local knowledge wherever possible to get the best from your trip.

A self drive loop through Brachina and Parachilna Gorge in the spectacular Flinders Ranges National Park will usually take about a day. Stop for a picnic lunch and search for the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby.

However there is nothing like really getting outback and getting off the track if you have a 4WD vehicle to do it. There are several private tracks and a unique system of Public Access Routes (PAR’S). Do some homework before you arrive – there are plenty of 4WD books on the area.
